“Indelible in the hippocampus is the laughter.” – Dr. Christine Blasey Ford
Marinaro is pleased to present The Generalist, the first solo show by New York-based artist RJ Supa. Comprised of 14 drawings and paintings and 3 sculptures, The Generalist conceives a history through literal reflection, created and assumed recollections, and factual and collected ephemera.
Memories are duplicated as objects, providing them weight otherwise forgotten or unknown. Found photographs and objects compel the notion of a past as myth, wherein each ‘memory’ becomes altered through their recreation in acrylic and gouache paint – impacting the present.
By using source material both found and personal, Supa forces the grey area, not allowing for a simple black-and-white interpretation. The artist implicates the viewer as they see oneself in one of the three sculptures, causing them to become a part of the historic present.
RJ Supa is an artist and curator and has exhibited and performed internationally, including Salon 94, Cuevas Tilleard, New Release, Freight & Volume, the Kunshtalle in Baden-Baden, Germany and Steirischer Herbst in Graz, Austria. His work was most recently in The New Yorker for a group exhibition, Mother’s House.
